Finned Tube Radiators
Finned Tube Radiator: High Efficiency in Industrial Heat Transfer
The finned tube radiator, a fundamental component of industrial heating, cooling, and drying systems, is a heat exchanger that ensures the most efficient transport of energy by increasing the heat transfer surface area. This structure, created by adding fins to the outer surface of a plain tube, increases the heat transfer surface by 10 to 20 times, allowing for massive thermal power to be obtained in a compact space. As Fintherm, we take your operational performance to the peak while reducing your energy costs with finned tube radiators specially designed according to your process needs. These radiators are configured to transfer the heat of the fluid passing through them (steam, hot water, thermal oil, or refrigerant gases) to the air or another gas passing outside. The finned structure minimizes heat transfer resistance by increasing the contact time and area of the air with the tube surface.Finned Tube Technologies and Manufacturing Types
Within Fintherm, different fin attachment methods are used according to the thermodynamic and mechanical requirements of the application area. The most preferred technologies in the finned tube radiator manufacturing process are as follows:- Wound Fin (Spiral) Coils: Obtained by tension-wrapping fins onto the tube. Temperature and corrosion resistance can be adjusted with different winding types such as L-Fin, KL-Fin, and G-Fin.
- Plate Fin Coils: These are models with high mechanical strength where rectangular or circular plates are arranged on the tubes individually and fixed by internal expansion (bulleting) methods.
- Oval (Elliptical) Finned Tubes: These are aerodynamic designs that reduce fan energy consumption by showing low resistance to airflow.
- Extruded (Bimetallic) Finned Tubes: The most efficient tube type where the fins are processed directly from the tube material, resulting in near-zero thermal resistance.
Material Selection and Corrosion Resistance
Material selection in finned tube radiators is determined according to the chemical structure of the fluid circulating in the system and the humidity of the environment. The wide range of materials we offer as Fintherm is as follows:- Tube Materials: Carbon steel, stainless steel (304/316), copper, brass, and cupro-nickel (bafon).
- Fin Materials: Aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and carbon steel.
- Protective Coatings: Radiator lifespan is maximized with hot-dip galvanizing, electro-galvanizing, or epoxy coating options for harsh environmental conditions.
Application Areas and Sectoral Use
Finned tube radiators offer professional solutions at every point where heat needs to be transferred from a fluid to air or from air to a fluid:- Drying Systems: Textile stenter machines, food drying ovens, and timber drying facilities.
- Climate Control (HVAC): Heating and cooling coils in air handling units.
- Energy and Process: Oil coolers, generator radiators, and waste heat recovery units.
- Chemical and Pharmaceutical: Reactor cooling and air conditioning systems requiring precise temperature control.

Frequently Asked Questions
01.
What is a finned tube radiator and why isn't it used only with straight tubes?
A finned-tube radiator is a heat exchanger formed by adding fins to plain tubes to increase the heat transfer surface area. Air conducts heat much more slowly than water or steam. If only plain tubes were used, enormous radiators would be needed to transfer the required heat. The fins increase the surface area by up to 20 times, allowing the system to operate with high efficiency in much smaller volumes.
02.
In radiator design, how is the fin type (L, KL, G) selected?
The choice primarily depends on the operating temperature. L-Fin fins are preferred for economical solutions up to 150°C, KL-Fin fins with their serrated structure for moderate temperature and vibrating environments, and G-Fin fins embedded in the tube for extreme temperatures reaching up to 400°C. Choosing the wrong fin type can cause the fins to loosen at high temperatures and halt heat transfer.
03.
Which is more efficient: aluminum or steel fins?
Aluminum is a lightweight material that conducts heat much faster than steel and does not rust; therefore, it is a standard in cooling and air conditioning systems. However, for durability in extremely high temperatures (400°C+), areas with a risk of mechanical impact, or environments containing aggressive chemicals, steel or stainless steel fins are preferred.
